Sangrur, August 21: Tension gripped Sangrur district on Monday when a clash broke out between farmers and Punjab Police personnel at Longowal village when the former were heading towards Chandigarh to participate in a protest. Pritam Singh (70) died after he was run over by a tractor-trailer in a stampede-like situation.

He was taken to Rajinder Hospital, where he succumbed to serious leg injury. Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba said the incident took place during a protest organised by the BKU Azad at Longowal. 


An elderly farmer identified as Pritam Singh was tragically caught under the wheels of a tractor-trailer.

The protesters were advancing towards the Badbar Toll Plaza and Barnala Sangrur National Highway for a blockade. However, police personnel and other officials on the spot stopped them from marching ahead. However, as the protesters breached the barricades and continued moving with tractor-trailers, the police used a mild force. 

Amid all this commotion, an elderly farmer identified as Pritam Singh was tragically caught under the wheels of a tractor-trailer, leaving him injured. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Patiala hospital.
