HC seeks govt, CBI's response in Patiala 'fake encounter'; links drawn to assault on Army colonel
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the Punjab Government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged fake police encounter in Patiala. The case involves the killing of Jaspreet Singh, who was shot dead by the police on March 13, shortly after being named in the abduction of a seven-year-old boy, Bhavkeerat Singh.
The petition, filed by Jaspreet’s mother Baljit Kaur, calls for a CBI investigation, citing serious concerns about the impartiality of the Punjab Police. Kaur has alleged that her son was falsely accused and extrajudicially killed. According to the post-mortem report, Jaspreet suffered seven bullet wounds, three of which were fired at point-blank range — including one to the forehead.
The mother further claims that the same Punjab Police officials involved in Jaspreet’s killing — CIA In-Charge Inspector Savinder Singh, Inspector Harjinder Singh of the Special Cell, and Inspector Harry Boparai — were also named in a separate complaint involving the alleged assault of Army officer Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath.
Colonel Bath’s case, which also occurred on March 13, was already referred by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Chandigarh Police for independent investigation. The alleged connection between the two incidents — both involving the same officials and taking place within hours of each other — has intensified public scrutiny and prompted calls for accountability.
The HC has now asked the CBI and Punjab government to respond to the petition, and further hearings are expected in the coming days.
Baljit Kaur has claimed that her son’s rights were violated and that only a neutral, federal agency like the CBI could ensure a fair probe into the circumstances of his death.
