Punjab Roadways contractual employees call off strike days after protesting against government

PTC News Desk: Punjab Roadways' contractual employees have called off their strike five days after massive protest against the government. According to the President of the Punjab Roadways, Punbus Unit Contract Workers’ Union Gurpreet Singh, an agreement over the demands has been reached and government has also assured to reinstate the suspended employees.

According to Gurpreet Singh, during the strike the police detained several workers and cases were registered against them under serious sections such as Section 307. On the other hand, the management issued a strict order stating that departmental action would be taken against employees involved in the protest, and they would be dismissed from their jobs.

He said that the protest mainly demanded the release of workers who were jailed and the reinstatement of all employees. According to union leaders, the management has agreed to these demands, following which the decision was taken to end the strike.

Notably around 1,600 buses across the state had been parked at different depots for five days. Even after meetings between Roadways, Punbus, and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union leaders and the government, employees had not returned to duty over unmet demands.

Earlier the meeting between the government and union employees remained inconclusive as and the union claimed to continue their strike until their demands are met.
