Stop salaries to Punjab’s top departments for non-compliance to orders: HC to Punjab Govt

PTC News Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Punjab Government to prohibit the release of salaries to the Principal Secretaries of Education and Finance Department of Punjab Government due to non-compliance of High Court orders of provide service benefits to teachers in Punjab for the services rendered by them in government-aided schools. 

The order to stop salaries of Punjab’s top department has been passed by Justice Rajbir Sehrawat while hearing a contempt of court plea filed by Anil Kumarand and others. 


The official High Court order reads, “Accordingly, it is ordered that the payment of salary to the Principal Secretary to the Government of Punjab, Department of Education, Punjab, as well as, payment of salary to the Principal Secretary to Government of Punjab, Department of Finance, Punjab shall remain stopped till the compliance of the order.”

The case pertains to 2012, when teachers filed petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court, demanding fixation of salaries taking into account their tenure of service in government-aided schools while joining government schools. 

The Punjab and High Court ordered in favour of long-pending demands of teachers in 2018 and ordered the government to act on their petition by fixing of salaries. 

However, the government challenged the High Court's orders in the Supreme Court, but the government's appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court. 

Upset over the non-compliance of court orders to provide service benefits to teachers in Punjab and taking tough stance High Court ordered to halt the salaries of Principal Secretary of Punjab Education and Finance Department till further orders. 

The High Court also ordered that salaries of Punjab’s top department official will not be released until Punjab Government officials will not take action on High Court orders to fulfill teacher demands, 

The matter would be heard next on February 21, 2024.
