Baisakhi 2024: Baisakhi is one of the auspicious festivals of the Sikh Community, making the harvest of the crops. 

Baisakhi also known as ‘Vaisakh Sankranti’ or ‘Vaisakhi’, Baisakhi is a spring harvest festival celebrated in Punjab and other parts of North India. The festival usually falls on April 13 or 14 every year and marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year.


This year, there seems to be uncertainty surrounding the precise date for the celebration of Baisakhi, with confusion arising over whether it should be observed on April 13 or 14.

Baisakhi 2024: Date 

This year Baisakhi 2024 will be celebrated on April 13. The significance of the day dates back to 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, established the Khalsa Panth. This marked the baptism of Sikhs into the community, giving rise to a collective identity known as the Khalsa.


Baisakhi 2024: History 

Baisakhi in 2024 holds historical importance rooted in Sikh tradition. This day commemorates the establishment of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. It marks a pivotal moment when Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the first five Sikhs into the Khalsa brotherhood, laying the foundation for Sikh identity and unity. Baisakhi is celebrated with joyous festivities, prayers, and community gatherings, reflecting on the resilience and spirit of the Sikh community.


Baisakhi 2024: Significance 

Baisakhi is not just a celebration of festival of spring. It is predominantly celebrated in the Northern part of the country with a significance value surfing religiously that also covers the harvesting importance. According to the belief, on Baisakhi day, the system of 'class' was abolished which eventually gave the existence of equality among Sikhism that led 'Guru Granth Sahib' to be the Holy book of the religion.

The yellow colour is of special significance in Baisakhi which is why people dress up in hues of yellow and orange and also cook yellow-coloured foods.

Baisakhi 2024: Rituals 

Baisakhi, celebrated with fervor by Sikhs, entails various rituals steeped in tradition. Devotees rise early for and visit gurdwaras, where prayers and hymns resonate, honoring the birth of Khalsa Panth. The day commences with the Amrit Sanchar ceremony, symbolizing the initiation into the Khalsa brotherhood through the sacred Amrit. Devotees consume langar, a communal meal, fostering unity and equality. Colorful processions, folk dances like Bhangra and Gidda, and melodic Shabad Kirtan fill the air with joy and celebration. Baisakhi rituals encapsulate reverence, community bonding, and the spirit of Sikhism's rich cultural heritage.
