SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal accuses Punjab govt of misconduct

Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, in a tweet, said that the shove allegedly carried out today by the Punjab Police against the party’s chief sewadar from Khanna, Yadvinder Singh Yadu, on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, cannot suppress the workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

He alleged that to win the zila parishad elections, the AAP government first did not allow nominations to be filed and then captured booths on polling day. He further claimed that even on the day of counting, the government’s high-handedness has not stopped. Addressing Bhagwant Mann and his associates, as well as the police officers implementing what he termed unconstitutional and politically motivated orders, Badal said they could use all the force they wanted, but the leaders and workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal would no longer be cowed down, nor would the Akali Dal’s movement be halted.

    Summary so far

In Ferozepur, former gangster-turned-social worker Gurpreet Sekhon’s group has won two seats. His wife, Mandeep Kaur Sekhon, and Kuljeet Kaur Sekhon secured victories, winning one seat by over 8,500 votes and the other by 3,500 votes. Speaking to the media, Sekhon expressed gratitude to the people, saying their support elevated him from “floor to pinnacle” and he will always remain indebted to them. His win is significant as he had been arrested during the election campaign for allegedly intimidating voters but was later released following a High Court order.

In Ludhiana’s Khanna, the SAD staged a protest on the Khanna-Malerkotla road, claiming that their candidate Sonu Nagra was leading in the Libra zone but results were being withheld. Earlier, workers from BJP, SAD  and Congress had blocked the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway in Jalalabad, alleging irregularities in allowing their agents to enter polling areas. The police intervened and cleared the blockade.

The elections delivered a setback for key AAP leaders in several villages. In Kurad village, home to MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hair, AAP lost to SAD candidate Jaswinder Kaur. In Bharaj village of Sangrur, home to MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj, AAP was defeated by Congress by a margin of 25 votes, despite viral campaign videos showing Bharaj warning leaders and accusing associates of drug-selling.

AAP also faced defeats in Jagdev Kalan, the village of former minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, and in Sandhwan village of Kotkapura, home to AAP MLA and Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Sandhwan. In Sandhwan, SAD candidate Mahinder Singh won by 171 votes. However, AAP secured a win in CM Bhagwant Mann’s village, Satoj, in the Sangrur district Block Committee elections.

These results highlight a mixed outcome for parties, with local leaders’ influence playing a decisive role in village-level contests across Punjab.

    Counting begins
Counting for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti begins across all districts of Punjab.

PTC News Desk: Elections to Punjab’s zila parishads and panchayat samitis recorded a voter turnout of 48% on Sunday, amid allegations from Opposition parties that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) manipulated the rural local body polls. The Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) were among those who accused the government of rigging the elections.

The counting of votes will take place on December 17.

Polling was conducted to choose representatives for 347 zones across 22 zila parishads and 2,838 zones in 153 panchayat samitis. More than 9,000 candidates contested the elections, with around 1.36 crore voters eligible to participate.

For the counting of votes for the 2025 Panchayat Samiti elections in Mohali district, the Government Polytechnic College, Khooni Majra (Kharar) and the Government College, Dera Bassi have been designated as strong rooms and counting centres.

Notably, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and Lok Sabha MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the vote-counting process for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Block Committee elections. He has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking mandatory videography of the entire counting process across Punjab on December 17. The petition states that the objective of the PIL is to “safeguard the integrity, transparency and credibility of the Zila Parishad elections in the state of Punjab.”
