Punjab likely to reimpose Covid-19 restrictions

Chandigarh, April 19: Close on the heels of Chandigarh and Haryana and amid rising Covid-19 cases, Punjab is likely to reimpose restrictions to contain further spread. Punjab Health Minister Vijay Singla has also called a review meeting at the Secretariat in the evening to discuss the situation.

Notably, the Chandigarh UT administration along with the Uttar Pradesh Government on Monday made the wearing of masks mandatory in public and crowded places.  "Considering the increasing number of Covid cases in some of the States and UTs, all the residents of UT Chandigarh are advised to wear face masks in the crowded places", said the Chandigarh Health department in an official statement. In UP, masks have again become mandatory in the districts of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, and Lucknow. The UP Government had in its order last month said that wearing masks would not be mandatory in the state from April 1. However, now amid rising Covid-19 cases again, the Punjab Government is also likely to take similar measures to contain the spread. Of later, a major surge has been witnessed in Covid-19 cases being reported from across Punjab. On April 1, a total of 25 Covid positive cases had been reported, while from April 2- April 17, the number of daily cases fluctuated between three and 13.
On April 17, Sunday, a total of eight positive cases were reported from Punjab, with the number jumping to 29 on April 18 — a 72.4% jump in a single day. Out of 29 new cases, 10 have been reported from Hoshairpur, while six were from Ludhiana and four each were reported from Mohali and Jalandhar. One each Covid case each has have been reported from Bathinda, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Patiala and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts.
