PTC News Desk: Punjab government's claims of its crackdown against drugs have come under the spotlight after a police constable assigned to a VVIP security convoy was allegedly caught with a large consignment of heroin worth crores of rupees.

The Border Security Force (BSF) caught the constable during a checking operation and recovered 15 kg of heroin. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The BSF arrested Punjab Police constable Karanbir Singh after allegedly finding 15 kg of heroin in a Swift car at a checkpoint in a border area.

Karanbir Singh, a resident of Bhusa village, had previously worked as a police station clerk at a border police station. He was currently posted in a jammer vehicle that accompanies VVIP convoys.

Following information from the BSF, police from Sarai Amanat Khan police station reached the spot and took the accused into custody.

Probe underway into drug smuggling network

The incident has raised questions about the possible involvement of police personnel in cross-border drug smuggling. The accused is suspected of using his VVIP security duties and previous experience at a border police station to carry out the alleged activity.

Police are questioning him to find out where the heroin consignment came from and who was supposed to receive it.

The case has renewed concerns about the challenge of tackling drug trafficking in Punjab and the need to investigate any alleged involvement of law enforcement personnel.
