Protest erupts at Chitkara University over unverified claims of suicide by two female students; police vehicle vandalised
PTC News Desk: An agitation erupted Chitkara University in Patiala after unverified posts claiming two female students died by suicide went viral on social media. The students also sought an explanation about an ambulance that reportedly arrived on the campus at night and about sounds allegedly heard from the hostel. As the situation became tense, the university called the police. The students later got into an argument with police officers and allegedly damaged a police van.
A report began circulating on social media during the night of September 25-26 claiming that a female student had died at Chitkara University. The report further claimed that another female student fell ill after seeing the incident and was taken to hospital in an ambulance, where she also allegedly died.
As the information spread across the campus, students initially became frightened and concerned about what had actually happened. They later gathered together and began protesting on the campus.
SHO Gursewak Singh spoke to the protesting students, but they were not satisfied with the response and continued demanding an investigation into the claims about missing students. An argument then broke out between the students and police.
The agitated students allegedly surrounded a police vehicle, damaged it and broke its windows.
Banur DSP Sukhdev Singh said police had received a complaint from the students. The police will now examine the information provided by the students along with available records.
He said that if it is confirmed that any student is missing, appropriate action will be taken according to the law.
Police have also appealed to students and parents not to believe unverified information circulating on social media.
