High Court seeks response from Punjab chief secretary over delay in appointment of regular DGP
PTC News Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a response from the Punjab Chief Secretary over the delay in appointing a regular Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab.
The court has asked the Chief Secretary to explain when a regular DGP will be appointed and has sought a response within 10 days.
The High Court said the DGP's post is extremely important as it is directly linked to law and order across the state. It observed that such a key position cannot be managed through an ad hoc arrangement indefinitely.
The Punjab government told the court that the matter is also pending before the Supreme Court, where it is scheduled to be heard on October 8. Despite this, the High Court directed the Chief Secretary to clarify when the regular appointment will be made.
Petitioner Nikhil Thamman argued that Punjab is an important border state and should have a regularly appointed DGP. He said the current DGP, Gaurav Yadav, is serving under an ad hoc arrangement.
According to the petitioner, the UPSC had sent a panel of three officers in July for the post. The names reportedly included SS Chohan, Harpreet Sidhu and Gaurav Yadav. However, the state government has yet to make a regular appointment.
The petitioner has asked the High Court to direct the government to appoint a regular DGP without further delay.
