Jalandhar Police arrest Indian-origin man Manjit Singh Bedi , listed in FBI-most wanted list, he fled to India via Canada
PTC News Desk: In a major breakthrough, Jalandhar Police on Friday arrested Manjit Singh Bedi, a wanted fugitive in the high-profile US SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) fraud case.
Bedi allegedly carried out a multi-crore fraud involving the US food assistance programme and fled to India via Canada in April 2026 to avoid arrest. His arrest by Punjab Police shows that fugitives cannot easily escape the law by crossing international borders.
Manjit Singh Bedi is accused of being a key suspect in a multi-million-dollar fraud involving the US government's SNAP programme, which provides food and nutrition assistance to financially weaker families. US investigating agencies had reportedly placed him on their list of most-wanted fraud suspects over allegations of large-scale fraud.
Fled to India via Canada
After US agencies stepped up their investigation, Bedi allegedly travelled from the US to Canada and then entered India in April 2026 to evade action. He was reportedly living in Punjab while hiding his identity.
Punjab Police intelligence teams tracked his network, following which Jalandhar Commissionerate Police carried out an operation and arrested him.
Punjab Police are now in contact with US agencies and concerned departments regarding further legal proceedings and the extradition process.
Bedi is accused of committing fraud under a government assistance programme between March 2024 and June 2025. According to the allegations, he caused a loss of at least $600,000 (around Rs 5.3 crore) to the US government.
