Jalandhar encounter: Police shoot Doni Bal gang member in leg, pistol recovered
Jalandhar: The Jalandhar police shot an alleged gang member in the leg during an encounter on Saturday after he allegedly tried to escape while being taken to a location for the recovery of a weapon.
The accused has been identified as Sukhjinder alias Prince, a resident of Tarn Taran. The police said he was associated with the Doni Bal gang.
According to the police, Sukhjinder had been arrested based on CCTV footage in connection with a suspected crime. He was later brought in for identification as part of the investigation.
Police claim accused opened fire
The police said at around 8 am on Saturday, a team took Sukhjinder near the Dairy Complex in Jamsherpur for the recovery of a weapon.
During the operation, the accused managed to break away and tried to flee. According to the police account, he then fired at the police team, following which the officers returned fire.
A total of three shots were fired during the incident, the police said. A spent cartridge was also recovered from the spot.
The police said a pistol was recovered from the accused following the encounter. Investigators are also probing whether he was preparing to carry out another criminal operation.
Sukhjinder sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during the exchange of fire. He was taken to Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, where he is undergoing treatment.
Further investigation is underway.
