Punjab employees to observe statewide strike on August 27; govt services to hit ; know what will remain open
PTC News Desk: Ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, political and administrative challenged for the Aam Aadmi-led Punjab government seems to be mounting with the latest statewide strike called by government employees on August 27.
The Punjab Government employees and pensioners will observe state wide strike on August 27 (Thursday) against their pending demands including DA Arrears.
All the government organisation and services will remain shut while private services will remain unaffected and business will run as usual. There will be no blockades on roads and highways and markets will also remain open in order to avoid any inconvinience to general public.
Sukhchain Singh Khaira, coordinator of the Sanjha Mulazim Manch, said the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh will remain completely closed on August 27. OPDs at hospitals, government transport services, including Roadways buses, and health centres will also remain shut. However, emergency services will not be part of the strike.
Employee organisations said they received the Dearness Allowance (DA) following a High Court order, but their main demands include full implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and immediate regularisation of contractual and outsourced employees.
They have also demanded a review of the decision to implement pay scales based on the Central Government pattern and called for changes in the system in the interest of employees.
‘If demands are not met, we will ensure AAP loses election’
Employee leader Sukhchain Singh Khaira accused the government backtracking on its promises. He said the Chief Minister’s OSD had held talks with them on August 7 and given them August 27 as the next date for discussions, but the employees wanted an earlier meeting.
Khaira warned that if the government fails to accept their demands, employee organisations will work politically to ensure that the AAP loses the election.
