Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on Thursday that the state will honour wrestler Vinesh Phogat as a medallist. The Indian wrestler announced retirement after being disqualified from the Olympics.

‘Champion for us…’: Haryana govt to felicitate Vinesh Phogat as medallist

PTC News Desk: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on Thursday that the state will honour wrestler Vinesh Phogat as a medallist. The Indian wrestler announced retirement after being disqualified from the Olympics.

The chief minister referred to Phogat as a "champion" and stated that she will receive all of the respect and rewards that the Haryana government bestows on an Olympic silver medal winner.


"Our brave Haryana daughter, Vinesh Phogat, competed beautifully and advanced to the Olympic finals. Despite not being able to compete in the Olympic final, she remains a champion for all of us. Our government has decided that Vinesh Phogat will be welcomed and felicitated like a medallist. All of the respect, rewards, and facilities that the Haryana government provides to the Olympic silver medallist would also be extended to Vinesh Phogat," CM Saini stated.

He continued, "We are proud of you, Vinesh!"

The Haryana government's sports policy provides Rs 6 crore to gold medallists in the Olympic Games, Rs 4 crore to silver medallists, and Rs 2.5 crore to bronze medal winners.
