Punjab Kings' Costly Fumble: Unintended auction grab leaves Punjab Kings stuck with unwanted player
PTC Web Desk: In a surprising turn of events during the IPL 2024 auction on Tuesday, the Punjab Kings found themselves entangled in an unusual blunder. Their inadvertent purchase of uncapped Indian player Shashank Singh caused quite a stir as it was later revealed that the franchise had mistaken him for another player from Chhattisgarh.
Despite meticulous pre-auction preparation, the Punjab Kings' team, including key figures like Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta, faltered when Shashank Singh's name appeared. Acting swiftly based on what seemed to be a misidentification, they bid for him at the base price of Rs 20 lakh. However, no other franchise contested the bid, leading to Shashank Singh being inadvertently acquired by the Punjab Kings.

The situation took an unexpected turn when the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar, proceeded to the next set of players. It was then that the Punjab Kings realised their error, recognising that they had misjudged Shashank for a different player.
Mallika clarified the situation, acknowledging the misha, but confirming that the sale was final as the hammer had come down. Despite the franchise's clear indication that they didn't intend to bid for Shashank, Mallika maintained that the purchase was completed and both Player No. 236 and Shashank Singh (Player No. 237) were now a part of their roster.
Fantastic scenes here as the notoriously inept Punjab Kings manage to not only purchase a player they didn’t want, (Shashank Singh), they also admit to this in front of literally everyone. Singh we can guess is sat at home wondering whether to show up in March. #IPLAuction #pbks pic.twitter.com/PtLQv9t07H — Punjab Kings UK???????????? (@PunjabKingsUK) December 19, 2023
The unforeseen mistake left the Punjab Kings in a peculiar position, compelled to incorporate Shashank Singh into their team despite the initial misunderstanding and the realisation that they had not intended to bid for him.
