‘This World Cup, we brought you the trophy’: Prime Minister Modi meets Indian Women's cricket team after triumphant victory

PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the victorious Indian women’s cricket team at his residence on Wednesday (November 5, 2025) and praised them for their “remarkable resilience and comeback” in the World Cup after facing a tough phase with three straight losses. He also mentioned the online trolling the players endured early in the tournament and commended them for showing great mental strength to bounce back and make history.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled the team’s earlier meeting with PM Modi after the 2017 World Cup, saying that back then they had come without a trophy but hoped for success in the future — a dream now fulfilled. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said the Prime Minister’s encouraging words were deeply motivating for the team.

The Harmanpreet-led squad reached Delhi on Tuesday evening for the meeting, just two days after creating history by winning India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup title with a 52-run victory over South Africa in the final in Navi Mumbai.

During the interaction, Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma told PM Modi she had been waiting to meet him since 2017, recalling how he had then urged them to keep working hard to achieve their dream.

“I still remember when we met you in 2017. At that time, we did not come with a trophy. But it is a matter of great honour for us that this time, for something we have been working so hard for so many years, we have brought the trophy here,” skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said in the video of the interaction shared by the PM Modi on Thursday (November 6).

“Our aim is that we meet you again and again in the future and take photos with you and your team again and again.” In their second appearance in the Women’s World Cup final in 2017, India had lost to England by a mere nine runs after which the squad had met the Prime Minister.
