Virat Kohli to take indefinite break from ODIs, T20Is; informs BCCI

PTC Web Desk: Virat Kohli has reportedly conveyed his unavailability for white-ball matches to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), pointing towards his absence from India's impending tour to South Africa and the T20I series against Afghanistan in January.

Sources said he would focus solely on Test cricket at the moment, confirming his participation in the two Tests in South Africa.

According to the sources, Virat Kohli has informed the BCCI and selectors about his hiatus from white-ball cricket, deferring the decision about his return to the format. He remains committed to red-ball cricket, making himself available for selection in the South Africa Test matches.

Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over Rohit Sharma's presence in the white-ball segment of the South Africa tour. Both Rohit and Kohli haven't played T20 cricket since the 2022 T20 World Cup, stirring discussions about their potential return for the upcoming ICC event.

Speculations surrounded Rohit's leadership and batting prowess, fueling hopes of him spearheading India's charge at the T20 World Cup. However, it appears improbable for both Rohit and Kohli to feature in T20Is. Their future in ODIs also seems uncertain, given the limited white-ball action until the T20 World Cup. The schedule comprises three T20Is, followed by an equal number of ODIs and a two-match Test series against South Africa, where both are anticipated to play in whites.

Looking ahead, India's subsequent white-ball venture is a three-match home T20I series against Afghanistan, followed by a sparse itinerary. With only six T20Is and three ODIs scheduled till June, their potential absence may not significantly impact their participation. A clearer stance on their white-ball future is likely post the T20 World Cup, coinciding with India's tour to Sri Lanka for T20Is and ODIs.

Currently, both Kohli and Rohit are vacationing with their families in the UK. The selection committee, under Ajit Agarkar's leadership, is expected to unveil India's squads for the South Africa tour soon.
