Syrian army breaks siege of army base near Damascus
Syrian army has broken the siege of a military base which had been encircled by opposition forces on the eastern outskirts of Damascus.
Units from the elite 4th Armoured Division of the Syrian army broke through the defensive lines of the rebel forces on Sunday and entered the Harasta vehicle base from the west.
Around 200 Syrian government peronelle were believed to have been trapped in the base.
The Syrian forces set up a corridor for the supply of food, medicine and military supplies to the soldiers inside the base, who had been cut off from the outside for days.
Extensive bombing and violent clashes were reported as Syrian government forces fought their way into the area.
During the war, the base has become a major operation center and supply facility for the Syrian forces inside the Eastern Ghouta region, which has many towns and neighborhoods.
Rebel forces had stormed the base last week in a bid to relieve pressure Eastern Ghouta's towns.
Until then it had been used by government troops to strike at densely populated rebel-held areas where 300,000 people have lived under siege by army troops since 2013.
