from ManipurChamoli (Uttarakhand), July 30: The Badrinath Highway in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district faced severe disruptions as a result of landslides and heavy rainfall in the region. Authorities reported that traffic movement was blocked near Baba Ashram Karnprayag after stones rolled down the hill, creating hazardous conditions for commuters.
The incident occurred in Karnprayag town of Chamoli district, where a significant portion of the Badrinath National Highway (National Highway-7) was corroded due to the rising levels of the Lambagad drain following heavy showers that persisted since Friday night.
Chamoli Police revealed that approximately 50 meters of the highway were washed away due to the continuous rainfall, leading to a rise in the water level of the Lambagad drain. The falling debris further exacerbated the situation, posing a serious threat to travelers on the route.
Authorities shared visuals of the affected areas on various social media platforms, depicting large piles of debris blocking the road near Nandaprayag and Pursari. Additionally, the road was also obstructed near Navodaya Vidyalaya Peepalkoti on Badrinath National Highway due to the accumulation of debris.
Prior to this incident, traffic was already affected as a 70-meter stretch of National Highway-7 was damaged near Gauchar town in Chamoli district due to heavy rainfall. Officials from relevant departments promptly responded to the situation, working to restore the road and ensure a smooth flow of traffic as soon as possible.
These events highlight the vulnerability of the region to natural calamities such as landslides and heavy rainfall, which can lead to significant disruptions and pose risks to public safety. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and undertaking necessary measures to address the damages and prevent further incidents.
Commuters and travelers in the area are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with the latest information from local authorities to plan their journeys accordingly, considering the current weather conditions and potential road closures in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.
