PTC Web Desk: Canadian writer and poet Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel committee honoured her for work that connects ancient Greek and Roman literature with modern life, love, relationships and grief.

What the Nobel committee said

According to the committee, Carson does not simply retell old stories. She adds her own imagination and the feelings of today's world to them. Her writing often blurs the lines between poetry, fiction and essay, which is one reason she stands apart from other writers.

Who is Anne Carson?

Anne Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada. She studied ancient Greek and Roman literature and published her doctoral thesis on the subject in 1981.

Autobiography of Red: a monster with a human heart

One of her best-known books is 'Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse', published in 1998. It is based on a Greek myth that is thousands of years old and features Geryon, a winged red monster. Carson retold the myth in a completely new way. In her version, Geryon is not just a monster but a sensitive young man who loves his mother. The story turns an old legend into a tale about love, violence and relationships.

Two more books that made her name

Nox (2010): Carson wrote this book in memory of her brother Michael, who died in Denmark in 2000. Before his death, he had mysteriously drifted away from the family.

The Beauty of the Husband (2001): The book tells the story of a husband who cheats on his wife. Carson split the story into 29 sections, and each one opens with lines from the poet John Keats.

Women and the Nobel in recent years

Over the last 10 years, the literature Nobel went to 10 writers and five of them were women. Six wrote in languages other than English and six winners came from Europe. South Korea's Han Kang, who won in 2024, was the Asian winner in this period. No writer from South Asia has won during these years.

How the winner is chosen

Every year, the Swedish Academy invites nominations. Members of the Academy, professors of literature and languages, past Nobel winners and heads of writers' organisations can send in names. Writers cannot nominate themselves.

The Nobel committee first picks 15 to 20 names, and in May the list is cut to five candidates. The 18 members of the Swedish Academy then vote to choose the winner.

Nominations stay secret for 50 years

The Swedish Academy does not release a longlist or shortlist. Information about nominations stays confidential for 50 years, so the full list of 2026 nominees will come out only in 2076.

According to Nobel records, Indian writers such as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Sri Aurobindo, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and RK Narayan were nominated for the literature prize in different years.
