Flights between Dubai and multiple Iranian cities cancelled amid nationwide protests and Internet blackout
PTC Web Desk: Air travel between Dubai and several Iranian cities was disrupted on Friday as multiple flights were cancelled, leaving passengers stranded amid ongoing nationwide protests and a widespread Internet shutdown in Iran.
Information available on Dubai Airports’ official website showed that several inbound and outbound services connecting Dubai with Iran were called off during the day. Budget airline flydubai confirmed the cancellation of at least 17 flights. Although no official reason was cited on the airport’s portal, the disruptions came a day after Iranian authorities enforced a countrywide Internet blackout.
The shutdown is widely seen as part of broader restrictions imposed in response to growing unrest across Iran. Protests, driven by the country’s worsening economic conditions, erupted in late December and have since spread to multiple cities, prompting authorities to tighten controls, including limiting access to Internet services.
Flight cancellations were not limited to the UAE. Airlines operating out of Turkey also suspended services to Iran. According to Turkish media reports, Turkish Airlines cancelled 17 flights, while AJet withdrew six scheduled services. Low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines also scrapped its flights to various Iranian destinations on Friday.
Similar disruptions were reported in Qatar as well. The Hamad International Airport website indicated that at least two scheduled flights between Doha and Tehran were cancelled during the day.
