Hindu grocery shop owner killed in Bangladesh, second incident in 24 hours
PTC News Desk: Another Hindu man has been killed in Bangladesh, making it the sixth such death in just 18 days during the ongoing unrest.
Mani Chakraborty, a grocery shop owner, was attacked on Monday night while working at his shop in Charsindur Bazar in Narsingdi district. Unknown attackers assaulted him at the busy market. He was badly injured and taken to hospital by local people, but he died on the way or soon after reaching there.
Mani Chakraborty was known as a calm and respected businessman with no known disputes. His death in a public market has created fear among minorities, many of whom now say they feel unsafe. Community members have demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers and strict punishment.
Earlier the same evening, another Hindu man, Rana Pratap (45), was shot dead in public at Kopalia Bazar in Jashore district. Unidentified attackers opened fire on him at the market, and he died on the spot. Police reached the area, recovered the body, and started legal procedures. An investigation is underway to find and arrest those responsible.
These two killings add to several recent violent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. In recent weeks, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was lynched during mob violence. Amrit Mondal was also reported killed during the unrest. In Mymensingh, Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in another attack. On December 31, Hindu businessman Khokon Chandra Das was stabbed and set on fire by a mob in Shariatpur district and later died from his injuries in a Dhaka hospital.
