Imran Khan's party calls for protest as supporters demand his release from arrest

Islamabad, May 10: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the political party founded by former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, has urged its supporters and workers to gather at the Islamabad Judicial Complex at 8 am on Wednesday to protest the arrest of its leader.

The party has also stated that ongoing sit-ins and protests across the country will continue until the release of Imran Khan.

Taking to its official Twitter handle, Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stated, "Important instructions from the party leadership: Senior leadership of Tehreek-e-Insaf and workers and supporters of Islamabad will arrive at Judicial Complex Islamabad at 8 am. The ongoing sit-ins and protests across the country will continue in their respective locations until the release of Imran Khan."

The PTI's call to protest comes after Imran Khan was arrested outside the Islamabad High Court by Rangers on the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) warrant in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The NAB had launched an investigation against Imran Khan and others for the alleged gain of hundreds of canals of land in the name of Al Qadir University Trust, causing a loss of 190 million pounds to the national exchequer.

The charges allege that Imran Khan and other accused adjusted Rupees 50 billion - 190 million pounds at the time sent by Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) to the government.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday declared Imran Khan's arrest as "legal," even though Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had questioned the Rangers' move to arrest him from the court's premises. The court's verdict has been called "surprising" by PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry, who has said that the party will approach the Supreme Court to challenge it.

Protests have erupted in cities across Pakistan following Imran Khan's arrest, with PTI workers taking to the streets in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, and Mardan. The PTI has vowed to continue its protests until Imran Khan's release.
