India warns Pakistan of flood-like situation in Tawi river amid Indus Water Treaty abeyance
PTC News Desk: Amid strained diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan, New Delhi in a reportedly gesture of goodwill, on Sunday alerted Islamabad about the flood situation in the Tawi River.
The information was forwarded via the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, as the usual Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) channel remains in abeyance after the Pahalgam Terror Attack, Pakistani media reported, citing official sources.
However no official confirmation from either side has been reported regarding the development. But if the claims are believed to be true, this marks first such development that India used its diplomatic mission to convey such information.
Originating in Tibet, the Indus River passes through Kashmir and then flows across the entire length of Pakistan. The Indus Waters Treaty, facilitated by the World Bank, has regulated the sharing of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.
Under the treaty, India is entitled to 20% of the water from the Indus River System, while Pakistan receives the remaining 80%. The agreement allocates the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab—to Pakistan, and the eastern rivers—Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—to India, while permitting limited usage of each other’s allocated rivers for specific purposes.
