Hindu monk arrest: Petition filed in Bangladesh court seeking ban on ISKCON

PTC News Desk: A petition has been filed in the Bangladesh court seeking a ban on International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) amid mounting tensions following the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Das. In response to a write petition filed in the High Court the Bangladesh government called ISKON a "religious fundamentalist organisation".

On Wednesday, a lawyer filed a petition seeking a ban on ISKCON. In his petition, he also highlighted the death of assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam during clashes between security personnel and followers of the Hindu monk after he was denied bail.

The court sought response about the establishment of the outfit in Bangladesh. In response, the Attorney General, Md Asaduzzaman, said the outfit was not a political party. "It is a religious fundamentalist organisation. The government is already scrutinising them," the Attorney General said.

The High Court has ordered the Attorney General to submit response on government's position on the religious organisation and law and order situation in the country.
