Hate crime: Sikh woman sexually assaulted by two men, subjected to racist abuse in UK’s Oldbury

PTC Web Desk:  A Sikh woman in her twenties was allegedly sexually assaulted by two men and subjected to racist remarks in Oldbury, UK, last Tuesday, in what the police are treating as a racially aggravated attack.

The incident took place near Tame Road around 8.30 am. According to the police, the woman reported that the attackers hurled racist comments at her, telling her to “go back to your own country.” Investigations are underway, with officials reviewing CCTV footage and conducting forensic inquiries.

BirminghamLive described the suspects as “white men,” one with a shaven head and wearing a dark-coloured sweatshirt, while the other was reportedly dressed in a grey top.

The attack has sparked anger within the local Sikh community, who believe it was a deliberate and targeted assault. A senior police official acknowledged the community’s outrage as “fully understandable” and assured that patrols in the area would be stepped up.

British MP Preet Kaur Gill condemned the incident, expressing concern over the growing trend of overt racism.

“This was an act of extreme violence but also racially aggravated, with the perpetrators reportedly telling her she does not belong here. She does belong here. Our Sikh community, and every community, has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued. Racism and misogyny have no place in Oldbury or anywhere in Britain,” she said.

Another MP, Jas Athwal from Ilford South, called it a “vile, racist, misogynist attack” that must be treated with utmost seriousness. “Let’s be clear, this attack is a result of rising racial tensions in our country, and now a young woman has been left traumatised for life,” he added.

The latest incident comes less than a month after two elderly Sikh men were attacked outside a railway station in Wolverhampton by three teenagers. The men were kicked repeatedly, and their turbans were knocked off during the assault.
