US intel warns Iran can shut Strait of Hormuz at will from now on: 'More powerful than any nuke'
PTC News Desk: More than three months after the West Asia conflict began and following a ceasefire with the United States, concerns are growing over Iran's ability to influence the global economy.
According to a US intelligence assessment, Iran has the capability to shut down the strategically important Strait of Hormuz whenever it chooses. The report warned that Tehran could again disrupt global trade and energy markets, even if a peace agreement with Washington is reached.
The US and Iran reportedly agreed on Sunday to end the conflict, with a formal peace deal expected to be signed in Geneva on Friday.
According to media reports, Iran has learned how to use threats against Gulf energy infrastructure as a powerful strategic tool. One source described Iran's influence over the Strait of Hormuz as "a weapon more powerful than any nuclear bomb" because of its potential impact on the world economy.
The conflict began on February 28 amid disagreements over Iran's nuclear programme. In response to joint US-Israeli strikes, Iran allegedly launched missile attacks on energy facilities in Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, affecting parts of their energy production.
Iran also reportedly blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route through which about 20% of the world's oil and gas supplies pass, causing major disruptions to global energy markets.
