'Will always be friends': Trump backtracks after 'lost India to China' remark, PM Modi reacts

PTC News Desk: A day after US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States lost India and Russia to China, he backtracked and said that relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained strong, even as he voiced frustration over India's oil imports from Russia.

Trump said he has been very "disappointed" with India for buying "so much" oil from Russia, but insisted that he gets along "very well with Modi".

Sharing a photo of Modi with Xi and Putin on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump wrote: “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!”

Trump’s comments follow remarks by former US National Security Advisor John Bolton, who suggested that Modi’s once-strong personal rapport with Trump had ended.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday responded to US President Donald Trump's "always be friends" remark, saying he "fully reciprocates his sentiments". According to the PM, India and the US have a "very positive" global strategic partnership.

"Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership," PM Modi wrote on X.
