World Cup 2023: Ahmedabad gears up for 2023 Cricket World Cup opener between New Zealand, England

Ahmedabad, October 5: The eagerly anticipated first match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Comprehensive security measures are in place for the event, with a deployment of over 3,500 police personnel and officers.

Ahmedabad's Commissioner of Police, GS Malik, said, "The World Cup commences on October 5, with a match featuring New Zealand and England scheduled here. The police have meticulously arranged all necessary security measures. Our force comprises more than 3,500 individuals, including three Additional Commissioners, 13 Deputy Commissioners of Police, and 18 Assistant Commissioners of Police, supplemented by 500 home guards. We've implemented traffic diversions, which we've shared through our social media channels. Additionally, we have nine bomb disposal squads, a quick response team, and we are conducting evacuation drills at the venue."

In his message to the public, GS Malik urged everyone to enjoy the match peacefully and avoid creating conflicts. He also noted that no outside food or water bottles would be permitted inside the stadium. Fans, however, are encouraged to bring their respective national flags to support their teams, provided they do not have sticks attached.

The spotlight for this World Cup opener falls on New Zealand, as they seek to avenge their defeat by England in a high-stakes encounter four years ago. Notably, New Zealand will be without their key player from the previous campaign, Kane Williamson, and star pacer Tim Southee, who has claimed 214 wickets in the 50-over format.

England, too, faces challenges, as Ben Stokes, who came out of retirement to participate in the World Cup, is grappling with a hip issue and will not be taking the field against the Kiwis.
