Bengaluru-based journalism student becomes British Deputy High Commissioner for One day

A Bengaluru-based journalism student got an opportunity to become British Deputy High Commissioner for a day. Ambalika Bannerjee, a journalism student, became British Deputy High Commissioner, Bengaluru, for a day after she won the 'Deputy High Commissioner for a Day' challenge.

She said, “It was a power-packed day, I got to meet employees of British High Commission in Bengaluru. We had all the things planned from the beginning.” Ambalika on Friday took over the role of British Deputy High Commissioner, Bengaluru, from Jeremy Pilmore Bedford for a day.

She oversaw United Kingdom’s third-largest post in India by briefing sessions, holding meetings with the government and business stakeholders on the UN-declared ‘International Day of the Girl Child’. According to Bedford, the main agenda of 'Deputy High Commissioner for a Day' challenge was to highlight the UK’s support for women and women’s issues in the UK and across the globe as well.

The news agency ANI quoted Bedford as saying: “The concept is built around the International Day of the Girl. We conducted this challenge across our Indian networks. We had many young women for the challenge of Deputy High Commissioner for a day. We did this for the second time in India and it was done to highlight UK’s support for both home and international level for women’s voice, issues.”
