Chandigarh reports first Omicron case; youth fully vaccinated

Chandigarh reported first new Covid-19 variant Omicron case on Sunday. A 20-year-old youth, who returned from Italy recently, has been found infected.

He had landed in India on November 22. He had come to visit his relatives in Chandigarh and was under home quarantine. He was found Covid positive on retesting on December 1. As per protocol, he was then put under institutional quarantine.

His Covid positive sample was sent for whole genome sequencing to the NCDC, New Delhi. His seven high-risk family contacts were also put under quarantine and were tested for Covid-19. Their reports came as negative. The youth has been asymptomatic throughout and is fully vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine, which he took at Italy. He has been kept in a separate isolation since 11 days.

His seven high-risk contacts have also been tested again. The UT Health Department has appealed to all citizens to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Meanwhile, with 7,774 persons testing positive for Covid-19 in a day, India’s tally climbed to 3,46,90,510, while the number of active cases declined to 92,281, the lowest in 560 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.
