PTC News Desk: The son of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead in Amritsar on Monday night. The attackers allegedly opened fire on him as he was returning from a gurdwara after offering prayers. Around seven to eight rounds were reportedly fired.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital by people present at the scene. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police have registered an FIR against four people based on statements from the victim’s family. No arrests have been made so far. Police said an old rivalry may have led to the murder, but the investigation is ongoing to establish the exact motive.

The incident took place in Chite Kalan village, under the jurisdiction of Chatiwind police station in Amritsar. The deceased was identified as Teerath Singh, the son of the village’s current AAP sarpanch. His brother, Karaj Singh, is a Block Samiti member.

According to police, Teerath Singh visited a gurdwara on Monday evening with his friend, Ranjit Singh. As the two were returning, people who were allegedly waiting outside the gurdwara opened indiscriminate fire at them.

Friend also injured in firing

Police said around seven to eight rounds were fired during the attack. Teerath Singh suffered critical injuries, while his friend Ranjit Singh was also shot and wounded.

Hearing the gunshots, people at the gurdwara rushed to the spot. They took both injured men to a hospital, where doctors declared Teerath Singh dead. Ranjit Singh was admitted for treatment, and his condition was reported to be stable and out of danger.

The police were informed about the incident and began an investigation.

Four people named in FIR

The victim’s brother, Karaj Singh, told police that the murder was linked to an old rivalry. He said he had recently won the sarpanch election on an AAP ticket and that his family had previously been involved in a dispute with another group from the village. He alleged that members of this group were behind the attack.

Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR naming four suspects: Gurdit Singh, Gurjant Singh, Harkirat Singh alias Hockey, and Gora.

All four suspects are reportedly absconding. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest them, while a large police force has been deployed in the area. The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
