Decline in number of Afghan Sikhs worrisome: SGPC

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has urged the Government of India to approach its counterpart in Afghanistan to ensure the safety of life and property of the Sikhs.

In a press note issued here, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief secretary Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed concern over the declining number of members of the Sikh community in Afghanistan. He said the Government of India should intervene and make efforts for the security of Sikhs.

Dhami said some forces were trying to intimidate and spread a sense of fear among the Sikhs. Thousands of Sikhs had migrated from Afghanistan due to insecurity.

He said the SGPC would soon write a letter to the Central Government in this regard.

Notably, last July, India had said it would facilitate a settlement of Afghan Hindu and Sikh community members facing security threats in Afghanistan.

There are about 1,000 Sikh and Hindus left in Afghanistan, and the sense of insecurity was heightened after the massacre in Gurudwara Guru Har Rai, Kabul, in May last year, followed by the kidnapping of a Sikh, Nidan Singh Sachdeva.
