India reports 3.37 lakh new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate 17.22%

India reported over 3.37 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday, taking the total number of infections to 3.88 crores. Meanwhile, the active cases surpassed the 20.18 lakh mark. With a total of 3.89 crore cases, India has now become the second worst-hit country after the US. Active cases currently account for 5.43 percent of total infections, while the Covid recovery rate in India has dropped to 93.31 percent. The daily positivity rate has declined to 17.22%, while the weekly positivity rate is at 16.65 percent. Furthermore, Omicron cases reached 10,050 with 29 states reporting the infections from the highly contagious new variant. The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has surpassed the 161 crore mark. According to the government, 94 percent of adults in India have got the first dose of the Covid vaccine and 72 percent are fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, as per the new rules by the Centre, vaccination, including precaution doses, for individuals having lab test proven Covid-19 infection will be deferred by three months after recovery. The decision was taken after scientific evidence and recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.

This included 144 Omicron cases. Meanwhile, 52 people lost their lives to Covid-19 infection. Delhi reported 10,756 new Covid cases with 38 fatalities on Friday, while the positivity rate declined to 18.04 percent. According to AFP, the coronavirus has killed at least 5,572,224 people since the outbreak began in China in December 2019. With 860,248, the United States has the most Covid deaths, followed by Brazil (622,205), India (488,884), and Russia (324,752).
