21-year-old college student mauled by stray dogs in Kanpur, suffers 17 stiches on cheek and nose
Her right cheek was torn apart, leaving it split into two, while her nose and other parts of her body bore multiple bite marks
PTC Web Desk: A 21-year-old college student in Kanpur was left battling serious injuries after a brutal stray dog attack in Shyam Nagar on August 20. The victim, identified as Vaishnavi Sahu, a final-year BBA student at Allen House Ruma College, sustained deep wounds to her face and body, requiring 17 stitches on her cheek and nose.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when stray dogs and monkeys were fighting in the area. Amid the commotion, three stray dogs suddenly lunged at Vaishnavi, dragging her to the ground and repeatedly mauling her. Her right cheek was torn apart, leaving it split into two, while her nose and other parts of her body bore multiple bite marks. Despite her desperate attempts to escape, the dogs overpowered her again and hurled her onto the road.
Local residents, alerted by her cries for help, rushed with sticks to drive the dogs away. By then, Vaishnavi was bleeding heavily. Her family quickly reached the spot and shifted her to Kanshiram Hospital, where doctors performed emergency procedures and stitched her facial wounds.
The girl is now unable to eat or move her mouth properly due to the stitches
Expressing deep anguish, the family demanded urgent government intervention. “The authorities must take action. These dogs should either be caught and sent to shelters or removed from public spaces so that no one else’s daughter has to suffer like this,” they added.
The incident has once again ignited concerns amid the ongoing debate on stray dog management, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on sterilisation and relocation of strays to shelters—a subject that continues to draw strong reactions nationwide.
