Air India Express pilot arrested weeks after alleged assault on passenger at Delhi airport

PTC News Desk: An Air India Express pilot has been arrested in connection with alleged assault on a passenger at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), days after incident sparked outrage and prompted a government-ordered probe. 


The accused pilot, Captain Virender Sejwal was arrested after an investigation was launched into the incident involving alleged assault on passenger Ankit Dewan. 


"In the process of investigation, after the registration of the case, the relevant CCTV footage had been collected and statements recorded. The accused was also called for questioning, and his arrest was effected," the officer said in a statement.


Captain Sejwal has been booked under  sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 126 (wrongful restraint) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). 


According to the police, the incident unfolded near the staff entry gate at Terminal 1 and the passenger was advised by the CISF personnel to use the entry gate as he was travelling with young children. While Captain was also using the same gate. 


The argument broke out after the Captain questioned crew members moving ahead in the queue. Soon the argument turned into an altercation and the pilot allegedly assaulted the passenger prompting CISF personnel to intervene. 


The Ministry of Civil Aviation took congnisance of the incident and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, directing the Air India Express to ground the pilot with immediate effect. Reports were also sought from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
