IndiGo appoints William Walsh as new CEO, ex-British Airways chief to lead airline from August 2026
IndiGo leadership change: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a major leadership change. The airline has appointed seasoned aviation executive William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the airline said Walsh would take over the role after completing his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association on July 31, 2026. He is expected to assume office by August 3, 2026.
Walsh brings decades of global aviation experience to the role. He currently heads IATA and has earlier served as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group, one of the world’s leading airline groups that operates carriers such as Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling. His career also includes key leadership roles at Aer Lingus, where he rose from pilot to CEO.
IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta described Walsh as a globally respected leader with a proven track record in managing complex airline operations and driving growth. He said Walsh’s experience would be instrumental as IndiGo expands in an increasingly competitive international aviation market.
MD Rahul Bhatia described Walsh an accomplished industry figure with deep operational expertise and a strong customer-focused approach. He added that the appointment comes at a crucial time as IndiGo enters a new phase of transformation and expansion.
The airline noted that Walsh is widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders in modern aviation, known for steering major restructuring efforts and leading successful mergers and acquisitions during his tenure at global airlines.
As CEO, Walsh will oversee the airline’s overall strategy and operations, with a focus on improving performance, expanding the network, strengthening commercial strategy and enhancing passenger experience. He will work closely with the board and leadership team to guide IndiGo through its next phase of growth.
