PTC News Desk: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision to suspend the life sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. Sources told India Today that after reviewing the order, the agency plans to file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court at the earliest.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted Sengar bail by putting his sentence on hold while his appeal is being heard. However, this does not mean he will be released immediately, as he is still lodged in jail in connection with another conviction linked to the death of the rape survivor’s father. During the hearing, the CBI submitted written arguments, while the survivor’s family raised concerns about their safety and alleged threats.

The High Court also imposed strict conditions while granting bail. Sengar has been barred from entering within five kilometres of the victim’s home and has been directed to remain in Delhi for the duration of his appeal proceedings.

The CBI and the survivor's family had strongly opposed Sengar’s appeal and bail petition in the Delhi High Court.

"CBI has filed timely replies and written arguments in this matter. The family of the victim has also opposed the petition, citing safety and threats. CBI will immediately challenge this order," they added.
