PTC Web Desk: Claims circulating on social media suggest that the Centre has empowered the Delhi Police Commissioner to detain people under the National Security Act (NSA) from July 19 to October 18 specifically to suppress the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests.

The posts also claim that under the NSA, a person can be detained for up to a year without formal charges or trial if authorities believe it is necessary for national security.

Social media users have linked the Centre's order extending the Delhi Police Commissioner's powers under the NSA with the ongoing CJP protests, alleging that the move was made to crack down on demonstrators.

Delhi Police's clarification

The Delhi Police have rejected these claims, calling them misleading. In a statement shared on X, Delhi Police said the order is a routine quarterly renewal of powers under the National Security Act and is renewed every three months as part of the standard administrative process.

According to the police, the latest renewal order was issued on July 7, 2026, and became effective from July 19 to October 18, 2026. It also pointed out that the renewal was approved before the CJP protests began and was not issued in response to the ongoing demonstrations.

The police further clarified that no special request was made to obtain these powers because of recent events.

Delhi Police urged people not to share misleading information and advised citizens to rely only on official sources for updates. In its post, the force said that the routine renewal had been taken out of context and falsely linked to the ongoing protests.
