Top 10 deadliest train accidents in India: India has unfortunately experienced several deadly train accidents throughout its history. The accidents have resulted in significant loss of life and raised serious concerns about safety measure.

Here are some of the deadliest train accidents that have occurred in India:

June 6, 1981: It was on June 6, 1981 that India recorded its worst train accident which occurred in Bihar. A train fell into the Bagmati river while crossing a bridge, killing more than 750 persons.

August 20, 1995: At least 300 persons were killed when two trains collided 200 km from Delhi. The Firozabad rail disaster occurred on August 20, 1995, at 02:55 when a passenger train collided with a train that had stopped after hitting a nilgai.

August 2, 1999: Two trains collided near Kolkata, leading to the deaths of at least 285 people. The accident took place when the trains, carrying about 2,500 people, collided at the remote station of Gaisal in West Bengal.


September 9, 2002: The Rafiganj train wreck occurred when the Howrah Rajdhani Express derailed over a bridge on the Dhave river in Rafiganj, killing more than 140 people. Terrorist sabotage was blamed for the incident.

May 28, 2009: The Puri-Howrah Express collided with a goods train near Kharagpur, West Bengal. The accident caused the deaths of at least 148 persons and injured more than 200 others.

August 19, 2013: The Delhi-Darbhanga Vaishali Express derailed near Hajipur, Bihar. The accident claimed the lives of 52 persons and left over 150 injured.

November 20, 2016: The Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The accident resulted in the deaths of at least 146 persons and injured more than 200 others.

October 19, 2018: A speeding train ran over a crowd of people who were watching Dussehra celebrations near Amritsar, Punjab. The accident claimed the lives of 61 people and left many others injured.

June 2, 2023: Horrific accident involving three trains, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train, killing more than 250 persons
