Her demise marks the end of an era for viewers who grew up watching her deliver the nation’s most important updates with composure and clarity.

Known for her calm presence, dignified personality and impeccable Hindi diction, Sarla Maheshwari became a trusted voice in millions of Indian households. She served as a news anchor on Doordarshan from 1976 until 2005, dedicating nearly three decades to the public broadcaster at a time when it was the country’s primary source of television news.

She began her professional journey as an announcer while pursuing her Ph.D. at Delhi University. Over time, her commanding yet graceful delivery earned her a place as one of the leading faces of the national news bulletin. She witnessed and contributed to a transformative period in Indian broadcasting, from the black-and-white television era to the advent of colour transmission.

During a time when private news channels had not yet emerged, Doordarshan anchors enjoyed nationwide recognition, and she stood among the most familiar and respected figures on Indian television. According to family sources, her last rites would be performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi, today. The Delhi Police have made necessary arrangements to ensure security and maintain order during the ceremony.
