Himachal Pradesh: Tourists make beeline for Rohtang to celebrate White Christmas; massive rush at Atal Tunnel
PTC Web Desk: During the long Christmas weekend, Himachal Pradesh experienced an overwhelming surge in tourism, primarily directed towards the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, bridging Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti as the most coveted destination. The 9.2-km tunnel, the world's highest single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet, drew a massive influx of visitors, especially after Rohtang was blanketed in heavy snow on Saturday.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Himchal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu said, "We extend a warm welcome to the multitude of tourists who have graced us with their presence, surpassing even our expectations, to celebrate Christmas" This surge comes as a testament to Himachal Pradesh's resilience following the natural calamities during the monsoon season.
Highlighting the commendable efforts of the Kullu administration and the police, CM Sukhu praised their efficient management of the large tourist influx. They notably provided assistance to those stranded in the snow, especially around the north and south portals of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, where temperatures plummeted to a chilling minus 12 degrees Celsius after heavy snow.
