Fire engulfs five luxury tents at Jain Resort in Jaisalmer; all tourists safe
Expensive furnishings and electrical fittings were destroyed, and several tourists lost their personal belonging
PTC Web Desk: A massive fire broke out at a luxury resort in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer late Thursday evening, sparking chaos among tourists. According to the police, no casualties were reported, but five luxury tents were completely destroyed in the blaze.
Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly through the resort, prompting guests to flee in panic. With no fire tenders or civil defense teams reaching the spot in time, resort staff and tourists tried to control the flames by throwing sand. The intensity of the fire was so high that it could be seen from almost a km away.
Rajasthan Police officer Bagdu Ram said the incident occurred around 9 pm at Jain Resort while a music and cultural programme was underway. “The fire started in one of the tents and quickly spread to nearby ones due to strong desert winds. It took nearly 30 minutes to contain the blaze,” he said.
He added that expensive furnishings and electrical fittings were destroyed, and several tourists lost their personal belongings. The guests, mostly from Maharashtra, were relocated to other tents after the fire was extinguished.
Locals accused the district administration and municipal authorities of negligence, alleging that no fire brigade was available despite the area’s known fire risks. Bagdu Ram confirmed that a fire tender is usually stationed near the resort during the tourist season, but it was absent at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Resorts in Jaisalmer’s desert belt often host evening cultural shows featuring Rajasthani folk music and Kalbelia dance. Fortunately, most tourists were away from their tents attending the programme when the fire started, preventing a major disaster.
The tented resorts stretch across nearly 10 km from Kanoi to Sam village, housing between 20 and 100 tents each. With the Diwali season marking the beginning of peak tourism, the region attracts thousands of domestic and international visitors.
The incident comes just weeks after a tragic bus fire on October 14 on the Jaisalmer–Jodhpur highway, which claimed the lives of at least 28 passengers.
