Delhi weather update: Rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds likely as western disturbances hit North India
Weather update: Northwest India is expected to see slightly cooler weather this week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), two back-to-back western disturbances are expected to affect the region. Cloudy skies, light to moderate rain and strong winds across several northern states is expected to bring life to a halt.
As per the IMD, the first spell of active weather will be seen around April 3 and 4. Another round may begin from April 7. The impact will be more intense in some areas.
The Kashmir Valley, in particular, will see heavy rainfall during the early part of the week. The IMD has warned that isolated places in the region could see intense rain on April 3 and 4. Another western disturbance is expected to follow soon after, bringing fresh rain activity from April 7 onwards.
Along with rain, there is also a possibility of hailstorms in some parts of North India. Jammu and Kashmir may see hailstorms on April 4, 7, and 8. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, eastern Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh around April 4.
Strong winds are also likely during this period. The IMD has predicted thunder squalls with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph and gusts going up to 70 kmph in some areas. These winds may affect regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
In Delhi, the weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy throughout the week. Light rain and thunderstorms may occur, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
On April 4, the city is likely to see cloudy skies with one or two spells of light rain or drizzle. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, are also expected. A yellow alert has been issued for the day.
Similar weather conditions are expected on April 5, although no alert has been issued. The sky will remain cloudy, with chances of light rain and gusty winds. There may be some relief on April 6, with partly cloudy skies. However, rain and cloud cover are expected to return on April 7 and 8, with light showers and thunderstorms likely once again.
The IMD has said partly cloudy conditions might continue in Delhi until April 10, which could help keep temperatures slightly lower than usual for this time of year.
