JNU students accuse professor of sexual harassment, university initiates probe
The students alleged that the professor invited them to gatherings at his residence on the university campus, where he allegedly made inappropriate sexual advances.
PTC News Desk: At least 10 students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have accused a professor of sexual harassment. The university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is investigating the allegations.
The complaints were filed about a month ago. The students alleged that the professor invited them to gatherings at his residence on the university campus, where he allegedly made inappropriate sexual advances. He has also been accused of making sexually suggestive remarks during classes.
After the first complaint was filed with the ICC, several senior students supported the complainants and raised concerns about the professor’s alleged behaviour. Some students also came forward with similar allegations.
The ICC is currently investigating the matter. The JNU administration and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office have not issued any statement so far. The student body has also not provided any update.
WhatsApp chats trigger probe
The allegations reportedly began with viva examinations held in the first week of May. During the exams, the professor allegedly made inappropriate comments with sexual connotations, according to a source.
In the second week of May, one student shared her experience in an unofficial WhatsApp group meant only for students. This encouraged several other students to come forward with similar allegations.
According to the source, the professor allegedly made remarks suggesting that students could receive extra marks if they accepted his sexual advances.
