Kali idol turned into Mother Mary at Mumbai temple sparks outrage, priest arrested
The goddess’s face, usually painted black or dark blue, had been painted white.
PTC News Desk: People visiting a Kali temple in Chembur, Mumbai, were shocked to find that the idol of Goddess Kali had been changed to look like Mother Mary. Police have arrested the temple priest and started an investigation.
The incident took place on Saturday at a Kali temple inside the Hindu cremation grounds in Anik Village. A photo showed the idol dressed in golden clothes, wearing a big crown with white decorations and a golden cross on top. The goddess’s face, usually painted black or dark blue, had been painted white. The idol was also shown holding a baby figure, believed to represent baby Jesus. The background cloth had been replaced with a red one featuring a big golden cross, and fairy lights and decorations were put around it. When devotees questioned the priest, he said the goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to “dress her like Mother Mary.”
Police acted quickly after receiving complaints. The idol was brought back to its original appearance in the presence of police to avoid rumours or tension. The priest was presented in court and sent to two days of police custody. Officers said they are questioning him to find out his motive and whether others were involved.
A case has been filed under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting religious feelings and damaging a place of worship. Police said strict action will be taken.
Right-wing groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal strongly criticised the incident and demanded that everyone responsible be punished. They also urged police and the government to ensure peace and order in the area.
