PTC News Desk: The arrival of Chilaikalan brought the season’s first snowfall to several parts of Kashmir, ending a long dry spell and offering much-needed relief to residents after months of extremely dry conditions.

Snow was reported from the Gurez and Warwan valleys, as well as the higher reaches of south and north Kashmir, including Sinthan Top, Razdan Pass, Sadhna Top, Zojila and Sonmarg. Fresh snowfall was also recorded in Drass and parts of Kargil district, signalling a widespread wet spell across the region’s mountainous areas. For locals, the snow came as a major relief following one of the most severe dry spells in recent years. Kashmir had gone nearly two months without any significant rain or snowfall, worsening dry cold conditions and raising concerns over shrinking water resources.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, with activity likely to intensify over the next two days. Officials said precipitation is expected to become more widespread, especially at higher altitudes, and may continue intermittently until December 22. The snowfall is likely to ease the harsh dry cold, aid in replenishing glaciers, streams and springs, and restore some hope in the tourism sector, which had suffered due to the lack of snow during the peak winter period.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a review meeting on Saturday to assess winter preparedness in both the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region. He said necessary arrangements were in place to handle heavy snowfall, although their effectiveness would be clear only once the weather system fully sets in.

“I reviewed preparedness in both divisions, especially areas where snowfall is expected, all districts in the Valley and higher reaches of Jammu. Preparations have been finalised, but the real test will come once it begins to snow,” Abdullah said.
