The Army carried out an operation in the Korag area of Yousmarg in central Kashmir after security forces noticed suspicious movement.
According to the Army, troops from the Rashtriya Rifles and other security agencies challenged the suspected terrorists. The militants allegedly opened fire, leading to a gunfight. One terrorist was killed in the operation.
The slain militant was identified as Musa, who was wanted in connection with several attacks on both sides of the Pir Panjal range over the past few years, officials said.
Musa had reportedly escaped from an earlier encounter in the Yousmarg hills on September 5. His associate Yasir was killed during that operation.
Officials said Musa's death is a major setback to Lashkar-e-Taiba's activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Further details about the operation are awaited.
Following Yasir’s death in the encounter, security forces remained on high alert in the area. Search operations continued in the dense Pir Panjal forests to track down other militants who may have been travelling with him.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the encounter began after a joint team of security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on credible information about the presence of militants in the area.
Officials said that as security personnel approached the suspected location, the hidden militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight. The security forces retaliated and killed an unidentified militant. The operation was still underway.
