PTC Web Desk:  In a deeply disturbing case from Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area, a 20-year-old woman with hearing and speech disabilities was subjected to prolonged sexual abuse and left pregnant, with the police arresting her father after DNA tests confirmed his biological link to the foetus.

The case came to light in September last year when the woman conveyed discomfort to her grandmother using hand gestures, describing a strange sensation in her abdomen. She was subsequently admitted to Cama and Albless Hospital, where doctors discovered she was nearly five months pregnant. Hospital authorities immediately alerted the police.

Investigators said the victim initially faced difficulty communicating due to her disabilities and was hesitant to record a statement. During preliminary questioning, the father denied any wrongdoing and failed to provide an explanation for his daughter’s pregnancy. He also refused to lodge a complaint.

Following counselling, the woman later shared details with the police, leading to the arrest of another adult man and the detention of a 17-year-old boy, both identified by her as perpetrators of sexual abuse. The roles of additional suspects were also examined.

As part of the investigation, DNA and blood samples were collected from 17 suspects, including the father. These samples were compared with genetic material from the foetus. On January 27, forensic reports revealed a single positive match, confirming the father’s involvement. He was arrested soon after.

The police said the abuse occurred over several months, between March and September 21 last year. A formal case was registered on September 22, and further investigation is ongoing to determine whether others were involved.

Authorities have described the case as one of extreme vulnerability and betrayal, highlighting serious concerns around the safety and protection of persons with disabilities.
