Nine burnt to death as bus catches fire after collision with lorry in Karnataka

The bus was travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna when it was hit head-on by a container lorry and immediately went up in flames, police said.

PTC News Desk: At least nine people were burnt to death after a private sleeper bus caught fire following collision with a container with lorry on Thursday in Karnataka's Chitradurga district. The bus was travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna when it was hit head-on by a container lorry and immediately went up in flames, police said.

The police are suspecting that driver might had fallen asleep at the wheel. “The container lorry jumped over the divider and hit the bus. The lorry driver is dead. There were 32 people on the bus. We have 21 people injured in hospital, and we are looking for more people, the police said.

The collision caused the bus to catch fire and be completely destroyed. Nine passengers were killed in the blaze, while several others were injured and taken to hospitals in Hiriyur and Chitradurga for treatment. A survivor, Aditya, said the bus had left Bengaluru at 11:30 pm and the accident happened around 2 am. “After the crash, I fell down, broke a window and managed to escape. People were shouting for help, but the fire had already spread across the bus,” he said.

In a separate but similar incident on Wednesday, nine people lost their lives when a government bus veered into the opposite lane and hit two vehicles, police said. The bus reportedly lost control after a tyre burst. Four people, including two children, were seriously injured and are receiving treatment at government hospitals.
